2009 Grand Marshals

Paul and Dawn Shepherd

Paul and Dawn met in East Jr. High in Boise in 1957, and got married in July 1960.

They had 9 kids, six boys - Paul, Aaron, Daniel, Charlie, Ron and Mike and three girls - Paula, Kristin, and Sari.

In 1965 at the age of 23 they bought a sawmill in Stanley, Id.  They logged and saw-milled in Stanley

until they wised up and realized it was awfully cold and snowy in that area for that business.

In 1970 they moved to Garden Valley, better working conditions, not near the snow and cold temperature.

They bought 40 acres on the Middle Fork of Payette River at Crouch.  Setup and ran a sawmill and logging operation,

called Shepherd’s Middle Fork Building Supplies & Lumber Yard.  They also started building log homes in 1979.

After struggling to survive the economic 1980 recession they managed to trade their land for the Riggins Motel,

thus moving to Riggins in 1984.  (The best thing that ever happened to them even though they didn’t realize it at the time.)

They had moved to the Banana Belt of Idaho, nice weather and little to no snow.

Charlie, Sari, Ron and Mike attended school in Riggins as they were still little.

Motel business was a bit different but with the help of many neighbors and businesses they were able to build the Motel

business much more quickly than anticipated, thus they were fortunate to sell it in 1987.

During those years they got involved with the community.  They played town volleyball and basketball.

Dawn was Cheerleading advisor and helped with Jr. High volleyball.  Paul was elected to the City Council

and Dawn was Secretary to the Chamber of Commerce.  They were also involved with many many school and sports activities.  (Loved it.)

After they sold the motel they moved to North Bend, WA for three years, logging for Paul’s brother.  That was 3 years to long.

In 1991 they wanted to move back to Riggins so bad they bought the 7 Devils Saloon, another business

that they had to learn while on the job.  But because of many wonderful employees and neighbor they survived

and built the 7 Devils Steakhouse and Saloon so that after three attempts they were able to sell it in 5 years.

During the time they owned the7 Devils their son Charlie bought a sawmill and moved it to Riggins.

Back into the business of logging, saw-milling and building log homes, their main business.

Mike, Charlie, and several grandchildren work with them at Shepherd Sawmill & Log Homes, INC.

They got involved again in community activities.  They joined the Salmon River Cowboys Assoc..  Paul was a director

and they both chaired the parade committee for many years.

Paul also was Director of the Riggins Chamber and Gem Committee.

Paul was Jet Boat Director 1 year, both of them were on the Jet boat committee for 20 years.  Dawn served 6 years as Chamber President.

At the present time Paul is serving his 3rd term as State Representative for District 8.

Dawn was appointed by the Governor to the Idaho State Women’s Commission in 2006.

They are the proud grandparents of 36 grand-children, 5 great grand-children 2 on the way.

They have been very blessed.

Their son Aaron married Adonna, who is Ace Barton’s daughter, the Riggins Mayor at the time.

Their son Mike married Joni, the daughter of the Riggins Rodeo Secretary (Marty Clay) and Director (Donnie Clay).

They have some Rodeo history in the family.  Their daughter Paula’s husband Jim Tucker

(Killed in a logging accident in 1996) was a District High School All Round.  He was exciting to watch riding bulls.

His boy JC, ropes in various rodeos.  His first grandchild, Maddy Tucker (Levi Tucker’s girl)

has been competing in rodeos since she was 3 yrs old and now at the ripe old age of 9yrs

she has won a saddle and numerous ribbons and belt buckles.

Their son Paul’s daughter is an awesome cowgirl. Chelsey Shepherd has been on a horse since

she was born and has won State High School Championships, and qualified several times for national High school rodeo.

She continued her success participating in College rodeo. Her dad has remarked that he has to build her a

huge tack room to keep the numerous saddles and all that she has won.

Paul and Dawn want to thank their friends, neighbors, fellow businessmen,

businesswomen for all the support and friendship given them during all the years they have lived and worked in

Riggins and the surrounding area. You are the reason (besides the weather) we say moving

here was the one of the best things that ever happened to us!
